SERTOMA, an acronym for SERvice TO MAnkind, is a community service organization whose primary goal is to serve more than 50 million people with speech, hearing, and language disorders. SERTOMA also sponsors community projects to promote freedom and democracy, youth causes and a variety of other local community needs.
Las Vegas-Paradise Sertoma, established in April 1959, is one of more than 700 organizational members of Sertoma International, a 501(c) 4 not-for-profit international organization headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. With more than 20,000 members in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States, Sertoma clubs raise more than $20 million for service projects in their local communities every year.
Las Vegas-Paradise Sertoma is a dynamic group of business professionals and community leaders with a variety of accomplishments through the years. Past fund raisers and service projects include:
- Helping to establish an audiology laboratory at University Medical Center
- Producing a weekly cable television show in sign language under the banner of the Southern Nevada Deaf Resource Center
- Raising funds by selling memorabilia of Elvis
College Scholarship Program
Started in 1970, this program has grown to become one of Las Vegas-Paradise Sertoma’s most successful benefits program. The program is funded solely from interest on principal. 100% of all donations go directly into principal of the Las Vegas-Paradise Sertoma Scholarship Foundation. Since all members of the Las Vegas-Paradise Sertoma are volunteers, there are no overhead costs to administer this Foundation. Funds raised through art sales at ArtandCharity.com would be directly applied to the principal of this scholarship program.
This scholarship program is accessible to all in the Deaf community. In 2004, the Las Vegas-Paradise Sertoma Scholarship Foundation gave 88 scholarships. Some of the previous recipients of this scholarship program have now become teachers, while others have gone on to fulfilling careers and become productive citizens in the community.
