“Steven is one of the most extreme characters in a large number of wild characters I’ve encountered at Eastfield College.” Kathy Windrow, Eastfield College Art Department Chairwoman
Rock stars, museums, galleries and senators have collected Steven Spann’s work. Originally from Texas, Steven denied a lucrative financial planning career to pursue painting full time. Spann’s signature large canvases, bold colors, dynamic brush strokes and passionate energy are evident at first sight. Within the movement and flow of his work one can sense structure and logic. At times intellect and emotion are vying for dominance on the canvas. Perhaps this can be attributed to his being completely ambidextrous. Many paintings are done left hand or right hand exclusive but the majority of his work is compositionally structured with the right hand, while the overlying color and depth is applied with the left. One can be confident that there is a profound message embedded within the labyrinth of color and form. His influences include: Kirschner, Rodan, Diebenkorn, Picasso and Chagall.
Along with numerous solo and group shows, Spann also has a passion for giving back to the community by putting light in dark places. Steven's donated works have gone to Letot Center (runaway center for juveniles), Dallas Youth Village (first offender program), Denton State School (MHMR facility) and Crossroads Community Center (organization that benefits people who find themselves in difficult situations). Auctioned items have gone to the Dallas Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the New Beginnings Center, Down Syndrome Organization, Project Sunshine and Andre Agassi Center at Child’s Haven. Clients of Steve Spann include Elton John, Donna Talley (stylist for Better Homes & Gardens), John Klai (Klai Juba Architects), Jane Carroll (featured Floral Designer on Oprah) and Senator John Ensign.
