Understanding Various Art Forms

Art is produced using numerous techniques/procedures. Check out your knowledge/understanding of how images are produced. The production/reproduction method is one factor that influences price.

Lithography.A printing technique invented in the late 18th century in which the printing "plate" is a block of limestone, a sheet of zinc or a plastic plate. The design is drawn onto the plate with a greasy crayon or tusche, and then washed with water. When an oil-based ink is then spread on the plate, it adheres to the greasy design, but is repelled by the wet surfaces. The artist, or print maker under the artist’s supervision, then covers the plate with a sheet of paper and runs both through a press under light pressure. For color lithography, separate drawings are made for each color.

Serigraphy.A stencil method of printmaking in which an image is imposed on a screen of silk or other fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance. Ink is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface. Sometimes called silkscreen process or screen printing.
